Project Details

The Southside Proud concept was born when former Northampton Community College Vice President for Community Education Paul Pierpoint attended a neighborhood meeting in the winter of 2017 where all attendees were asked to introduce themselves and share one thing that they love about Southside Bethlehem. He was struck by the diversity of responses and the passion of the Southside residents and visitors for their neighborhood and community. “I thought to myself, how can we capture this pride in the Southside to share with others?” Pierpoint explained. “That’s where the concept of Southside Proud originated.”

Pierpoint brought his idea to the Southside Vision Transforming Community Image committee, where representatives from the Southside Arts District, Lehigh University, ArtsQuest, residents, and business owners shared his enthusiasm for promoting all that is positive on the Southside. “We have so many assets in our neighborhood, from a vibrant commercial district with unique stores and restaurants, to our parks and green spaces, and above all, our people,” Anna Smith, Director of the Community Action Development Corporation of Bethlehem, explained. “With this campaign, we hope to combat negative stereotypes that originate both within and outside of our community, and highlight what makes us proud to be members of the Southside community.”

The Southside Proud campaign is a grassroots campaign to highlight all that is great about south Bethlehem, from the perspective of those who live, work, and play on the Southside.
