COMMUNITY GARDEN EXPERIENCE AT NORTHAMPTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Project Description

Project Details

The NCC East 40 Reading and Writing Project will explore the various facets of Northampton Community College’s East 40 Community Garden through reading and writing activities supported by experiential learning with the aim of increasing literacy rates and college readiness. Youth will plant, harvest and prepare the garden’s bounty, learn husbandry from a beekeeper, use clay from the garden to make their own pottery, and tackle a ropes course in the nearby woods. The program will also expose kids (and their parents) to life on a college campus, including a tour, visits to the library, and the opportunity to meet with staff from the admissions office and faculty. The program will close with a family event that showcases all they’ve learned.

The goals of the program are to help improve literacy rates and increase college readiness while learning about the various principles of healthy living and sustaining our natural resources. For the Fall 2017 semester, 35% of incoming students who took a placement test, required some level of remediation to be college ready for either reading or writing. This program is an opportunity for youth to have a summer gain with their basic skills rather than a loss. The program will serve 8-10 middle school students during summer 2019.
